The Unmoored was conceived at a diner after a show, like so many ideas and illegitimate children. Officially formed in early Summer of 2026, Matt Ruben and Cynthia Sheppard re-ignited a shared interest in making music together that started in a basement years earlier.
Their self-titled debut album, The Unmoored, pays homage to trip hop and other electronic musical influences from the past few decades, with a hint of their shared roots in goth/industrial music. Songs from the album explore themes of love, control, corpse reanimation, and loss with a sense of wonder and (sometimes threatening) whimsy.
The Unmoored does not use AI in any part of the production process. They use imperfect-but-human minds to write melodies and words, and use samples from non-AI sources.
